When we designed our blue topaz Jewellery for men as well as women, we wanted to achieve a modern timeless setting. A setting that would draw the eye to the beauty of the gem, without the need of embellishments. So, for our ‘Out of the Blue’ collection of blue topaz Jewellery set in Sterling silver, we chose a bezel setting rather than a traditional claw setting.
What is a Bezel Setting?
A bezel setting is a technique where a metal rim encircles the gemstone, holding it securely in place. Unlike claw settings that grip the stone, the bezel wraps around the edges of the gem, creating a sleek, smooth frame. This results in a cleaner silhouette that enhances the gem’s shape while offering exceptional protection.
The Art of the Bezel: Why It Takes Time
But we did not realise the precision and craftsmanship required for such a setting. In a traditional claw setting there is a certain amount of leeway in the cut of the stone, a fraction of a millimeter difference in depth or width can be easily accommodated. But a bezel setting requires each gem to be cut to a precise measurement, which means that we have to sort through hundreds of our Ostro blue topaz gems by hand, to find the gems with the exact dimensions to fit into the bezel surround—there’s no one-size-fits-all here.
It is a delicate balance of craftsmanship and patience—a labour of love that we hope is reflected in the finished product.
Intricate Design, Modern Feel
One of the reasons we love bezel settings is their clean, contemporary aesthetic. The uninterrupted lines and smooth contours bring a modern elegance to our pieces. Whether it's our “Forever” blue topaz charms or “Play by Ear” blue topaz earrings, bezel settings create a refined frame that lets the stone truly shine.
And while the look is minimal, the work behind requires all our love and craftsmanship.
Made to Last
Beyond beauty, we also love that bezel settings are incredibly practical. By enclosing the stone, the setting protects against chips and snags, making it ideal for everyday wear. And this is blue topaz Jewellery to be worn on a wedding day and every day!
